WATCH: GOP reps want Trump, Sessions to ‘iron out’ differences

Republican lawmakers told The Hill Wednesday that they hope President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions work out their differences and move on as tensions rise between the White House and the Justice Department head.

“A lot of guys around here respect Jeff Sessions,” Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.) told The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper. “I hope this miff can be ironed out or worked out but it remains to be seen.”

Lawmakers comments come after Trump on Monday described Sessions as “beleaguered.” In an interview last week Trump also repeated his disappointment that the attorney general had recused himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian meddling in the presidential election.

{mosads}Sessions stepped aside from that probe after it was revealed that he did not disclose in his confirmation hearings meetings he attended with Russia’s ambassador to the United States.

Trump’s comments have fueled speculation that he might fire Sessions.

Asked how conservatives on Capitol Hill would respond to President Trump firing the former Alabama Senator, Rep. Mike Bishop (R-Mich.) said: “I can’t imagine the president, who is very close to Sessions — and he knows about the reputation of the man here — I can’t imagine that this would end that way.”

GOP Rep. Dave Brat (Va.), a leader of the Freedom Caucus, wouldn’t predict the reaction among GOP lawmakers if Trump does fire Sessions, a favorite among conservatives.

“I don’t want that to happen,” Brat said in an interview, adding that his advice for Sessions is to “stay the course.”

Still, several Republican lawmakers acknowledged that the President has the right to fire members of his Cabinet.

“President Trump’s a business guy just like I’m a business guy … I think he’s been clear about what’s bothering him but I don’t think it’s something we think much about,” on the House side, Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) said.
