WATCH: GOP lawmakers divided on Trump’s transgender military ban

GOP lawmakers are divided over President Trump’s ban on transgender Americans serving in the military, which he announced via Twitter on Wednesday.

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee on Military Personnel, doesn’t “think he needed to go as far as he did” with the surprise announcement.

Coffman told The Hill Trump could have just stopped taxpayer funding for transition surgeries.

“But what he did in his tweet was he went way beyond that and said ‘they cannot serve, which is fairly dramatic in terms of what the requirements are for the Department of Defense,” he said.

Other lawmakers, including Texan Reps. Joe Barton (R) and Roger Williams (R) back the president’s tweeted policy.

“I support him all the way,” Williams said.

Barton said, “I think the president made the right decision.”
