McCain the king of nicknames
Many nicknames have been bestowed on Sen. John McCain, but there’s at least one the Arizona Republican says he doesn’t exactly get how he received: “White Tornado.”
“I’m not sure,” McCain said after revealing one of his many nicknames to host Jimmy Fallon in a Monday appearance on NBC’s “Late Night.”
{mosads}Fallon likened the lawmaker’s nickname to “a frozen mixed drink at a Sandals resort.”
McCain recalled some of the other names he’s garnered over the years, quipping that when it comes to being called “Punk” and “McNasty,” “I still carry those in the Senate.”
The 2008 presidential candidate says he earned some other dubious names after losing the White House race to President Obama, including, “jerk, idiot, loser.”
McCain, 77, laid on the self-deprecating humor during his late-night sit-down. After congratulating Fallon on the comedian’s baby daughter, born this summer, the five-term senator quipped, “After I lost running for president, I slept like a baby. Sleep two hours, wake up, and cry.”
Between the banter, McCain addressed other issues hanging over Washington, including the rollout of ObamaCare, which has been plagued with technical problems.
“Why they had to use 1990’s technology,” McCain began to say of the Obama administration before jesting, “or maybe they used technology that Calvin Coolidge and I used to use together.”
He added, “They used the wrong technology and obviously that part’s going to be fixed… This is a very complex and difficult issue and obviously it’s not working. But we Republicans need to think of ways to fix it and give our agenda.”
McCain characterized his relationship with Obama as “good,” saying, “I think that there’s a little bit too much of this partisanship and maybe we ought to try to find ways to work together. “
