Robert Redford: Hillary ‘fortifying herself to win’
Actor Robert Redford is weighing in on Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid and sees the Democratic front-runner laying the groundwork for a tough campaign.
“I think she is demanding that she has a chance. I think she’s fortifying herself to win by touching what is important to win, which is money and things like that,” Redford said during an interview with Christiane Amanpour on CNN.
{mosads}”That seems to me [a] very conventional way to proceed, but they’re all going that direction, because I think they feel they need it,” he said.
The “All the President’s Men” and “The Sting” star made headlines recently after Donald Trump seized on comments he made praising the GOP front-runner.
Redford had said he was “glad” the real estate magnate was running in 2016 because he could shake up the establishment. He walked back his earlier praise for Trump through a spokesman on Tuesday.
“I’m not interested in that, quite frankly,” Redford said on Wednesday, after mentioning two other top GOP presidential candidates, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Trump.
In his interview, Redford discussed the nature of modern campaigns.
“I was told when I was playing sports it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game,” Redford told CNN, referring to his childhood. “And I found that out to be a lie.
“If you go today, you look at the political landscape, you see it’s so much about winning,” Redford added, mentioning Clinton, Bush and Trump. “It’s all about winning.”
Redford said he is more interested in focusing on the poor and middle class.
“There are wonderful stories in there that you can pull out. You can’t just say it as kind of political — the right thing to say — I would like to see you go into it and pull stuff out,” Redford said. “When politicians start sloganeering then I lose interest.”
