Poll: Gingrey, Broun lead GOP Senate field in Georgia

{mosads}Gingrey pulls 25 percent support, while Broun clocks in with 19 percent backing. Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) has 15 percent support, former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel (R) has 13 percent support and businessman David Perdue (R) has 5 percent in the poll.

The candidates are all angling for one of two slots in the GOP’s runoff. Many Republican strategists have expressed fear about Broun as a general election candidate because of his hardline conservative views and history of controversial statements, and a few are also nervous about Gingrey, who’s made some controversial remarks of his own.

There’s plenty of room for the candidates to grow. Fully 20 percent percent of voters are undecided, and more voters don’t have an opinion of the candidates than feel positively or negatively about them.

Democrats are counting on nonprofit CEO Michelle Nunn (D), whom the poll shows tied with or running ahead of all the Republicans currently in the race.

The automated poll of 260 usual Republican primary voters was conducted from Aug. 2-5 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 6.1 percentage points.
