Peter R. de Vries, the acclaimed Dutch crime reporter, has died from his injuries after being shot last week in Amsterdam, Dutch media reported.
“Peter has lived by his conviction: ‘On bended knee is no way to be free,’” his family said in a statement through RTL. “We are unbelievably proud of him and at the same time inconsolable.”
De Vries, 64, garnered acclaim for his journalism detailing the 1983 kidnapping of beer tycoon Freddy Heineken, as well as his reporting on the 2005 disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, for which he won an International Emmy Award.
De Vries was shot while leaving the RTL broadcasting studio, according to authorities.

“He is a national hero to us all. A rare, courageous journalist who tirelessly sought justice,” Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said at a news conference following the shooting.
Two suspects have been arrested in connection to the shooting and identified by authorities as Delano G., 21, and Kamil Pawel E., 35. The last names have been withheld by authorities in accordance with Dutch law.
The Daily Beast and other outlets reported that Delano, an aspiring rapper, appeared as a teenager on “So You Think You Can Dance?,” and Kamil was born in Poland and does “assembly work.”
No motive has been given at this time.
