Britney Spears investigated for allegedly attacking her own staffer

Story at a glance

  • Pop star Britney Spears is fighting to end a conservatorship imposed on her by the California legal system.
  • Following a public campaign to have her father removed from her conservatorship, Spears is being accused of attacking a staffer.
  • Her lawyer said the incident was “overblown” and the accusation “manufactured.”

As she fights to clear her name from a conservatorship, Britney Spears is facing allegations of assault over a “cellphone,” according to her lawyer.

The pop star is under investigation, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office told The Associated Press, after a staff member reported an alleged assault to police.

Spears’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, told The Guardian in an email that the investigation was “overblown sensational tabloid fodder, nothing more than a manufactured ‘he said she said’ regarding a cellphone, with no striking and obviously no injury whatsoever.”

As the subject of a conservatorship, Spears’ internet and cellphone use is heavily restricted by her father and fiance, who have full control over her personal and financial affairs, reported The Huffington Post

“Anyone can make an accusation, but this should have been closed immediately,” Rosengart told the Guardian.

Rosengart was recently hired after a judge granted Spears permission to choose her own representation — a right that had previously been denied to her by her conservators, including her father Jamie Spears. In July, a New York Times investigation revealed Spears has been pushing against the conservatorship and her father’s involvement for years now, as detailed in confidential court documents obtained by the outlet. After a public hearing, the pop star was denied her appeal to have her father removed from the conservatorship but her new lawyer has resumed the fight.
