Diner leaves massive $10k tip at Florida restaurant hurt by pandemic

Story at a glance

  • A diner at a Florida restaurant left a $10,000 dollar tip for a 10-person crew to split.
  • The man gathered the team together to express his gratitude before paying the $144 bill.
  • Like many restaurants across the U.S., Wahoo struggled to stay open in the early days of the pandemic.

A diner rewarded the effort of the 10-person staff at the Wahoo Grill in north Florida last week when he left a $10,000 tip for them to split  after thanking the group for their hard work.

One of the restaurant’s employees called the owner Shawn Shepherd to detail the massive gratuity the man left on his $144 bill, The Gainesville Sun reported

“Check his ID and the name on the back of his credit card,” Shepherd told the employee.

Shepard told the paper he was shocked when the payment went through, and detailed the emotions he felt watching his staff get their $1,000 rewards.

“Watching these guys get their check was almost as good as Christmas morning,” he said.

Like many restaurants across the U.S., Wahoo struggled to stay open in the early days of the pandemic., Shepherd told the Sun. At one point, the restaurant closed and lost roughly $30,000 worth of food.

“I knew nothing about curbside, I knew nothing about delivery and take out. We weren’t prepared for that. We didn’t even have the containers to do it,” he told the paper.

Shepherd was able to find emergency funding with the assistance of the Florida Restaurant Lodging Association and the county Chamber of Commerce, and Wahoo opened its doors again on May 8.

“And that was all great, but we had no business coming through the front door,” Shepherd concluded.
