The classic rock band confirmed the news on social media on Tuesday.

 

It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family,” a spokesperson said. “Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”

Watts spent over five decades as the Rolling Stones’ drummer and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band, once called “the world’s greatest rock & roll band” is known for hits such as “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Paint It Black.”

Several musicians and celebrities took to social media to mourn Watts, including Elton John.

 

Watts stopped performing with the band earlier this month after undergoing an unknown surgery.

A cause of death hasn’t been disclosed at this time.
