Tesla wants to sell power in Texas following grid failure

Story at a glance:

  • Tesla is trying to sell electricity directly to customers in Texas.
  • TTesla Energy Ventures  aims to store 100 megawatt energy onto the power grid.
  • The Tesla subsidiary  will use employees from Tesla’s energy division, which is the division that sells solar rooftops.

Elon Musk’s Tesla is taking steps to supply electricity directly to customers in Texas, according to an application filed with the Public Utility Commission.

Tesla has filed to be an energy retailer called Tesla Energy Ventures where it aims to store 100 megawatt energy onto the power grid, Texas Monthly reported.

The company has already built several utility-scale energy storage systems in major key locations such as Los Angeles and Monterey, California and Geelong, Victoria, Adelaide, Australia, but supplying Texas with its electricity is a big responsibility.

Unlike most states, the Texas electricity grid is managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, a nonprofit group that handles more than 25 million households in Texas. However, the February blackout left many Texans critically without power and some succumbed to the cold. Tesla was quick in criticizing ERCOT for not being “reliable.”

Tesla Energy Ventures will use employees from Tesla’s energy division, which is the division that sells solar rooftops. Tesla’s application also noted its partnership with Engie Energy Marketing on scheduling.

As Changing America previously reported, Musk is turning a neighborhood in Austin, Texas, into a solar-powered destination.

In a new partnership with real estate developer Dacra and alternative asset manager Brookfield Asset Management, Tesla has already begun construction on the neighborhood in Southeast Austin, The Independent reported.

The plan will equip houses with V3 solar roof tiles, Powerwall battery storage and charging points for Tesla electric cars.
