California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced Thursday that his state would give more than $116 million in total prizes to residents who get their COVID-19 vaccine.
The reward system, which would award 10 Californians $1.5 million, puts the state front and center among a growing collection of states offering their residents cash incentives to get vaccinated against COVID-19. All state residents 12 and older who have received at least one shot will be eligible to win the prize money.
“We’re putting aside more resources than any other state in America, and we’re making available the largest prizes of any state in America for those that seek to get vaccinated,” Newsom announced at a Los Angeles high school, The Associated Press reported.
Newsom, who aims to have 70 percent of Californians vaccinated before June 15, said Thursday that the state will also give $50 to the next 2 million people who get their vaccines.

The top prize drawing will take place June 15, while 30 drawings worth $50,000 apiece will begin June 4. Residents will automatically be entered into the drawing via the state’s immunization database, according to the AP.
“Getting every eligible Californian vaccinated is how we bring our state roaring back from this pandemic,” Newsom said in a press release.
“California has already made incredible progress in the fight against COVID-19, with the lowest case rates in the country, while administering millions more vaccines than any other state,” he added. “But we aren’t stopping there, we’re doing everything it takes to get Californians vaccinated as we approach June 15 to help us fully reopen safely.”
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) initiated the growing reward trend earlier this month when he announced his state would conduct five drawings, each worth $1 million, from a list of names of people who had received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

Slightly more than 39 percent of California residents have been fully vaccinated, Johns Hopkins University data shows. Meanwhile, the state reported 5,339 new cases and 151 deaths in the last day. Approximately 62 percent of U.S. adults have received at least one vaccine dose nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
