Tim Murtaugh, communications director for President Trump’s reelection campaign, expressed confidence in the president’s chances to win the general election in November, even as many polls show a tight race between him and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee former Joe Biden.
“We know President Trump is in solid shape, particularly in these key states that we’re looking at, Murtaugh told Hill.TV Wednesday. “Our own internal numbers show that the president is in as solid of a position as he was before coronavirus took effect.”
He added: “Even though we don’t trust public polls because they notoriously under-poll President Trump, we know that even CNN shows that the president has a seven-point lead in their battleground states.”
The recent CNN poll that Murtaugh referenced showed Trump leading Biden in battleground states 52 percent to 45 percent. The network defines battleground states as states that were decided by eight points or less in 2016. Nationally, Biden had the edge in the poll, 51 percent to 46 percent.
Additionally, RealClearPolitics’ average of polls has Biden with small leads in Wisconsin, Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania – key swing states that Trump flipped and narrowly won in 2016. The four battleground states were won in 2008 and 2012 by former President Obama.
