House, Senate GOP campaign arms see record-breaking hauls after Trump verdict
The Republican House and Senate campaign arms saw their best one-day online fundraising hauls of the cycle after former President Trump was convicted in his New York case.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) raked in more than $300,000 Thursday. About 22 percent of those donors were new, according to a spokesperson.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) raised $360,000, according to a release. Online donations “tripled” after the verdict was announced.
Punchbowl News first reported the House campaign arm’s new figure, which beats the $175,000 pulled in when House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was elected into his leadership role. The Senate campaign arm’s total for the day bests the $325,000 drawn in on Super Tuesday, as reported by Politico.
Trump on Thursday was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the historic case in New York. He was charged in connection with a payment made by his then-attorney, Michael Cohen, to porn actor Stormy Daniels to quiet her allegations of an earlier affair with Trump.
It’s the first time a former president has become a convicted felon. Trump has railed against the verdict and decried the judge in what he called the “rigged” trial and argued he’s “a very innocent man.” Many in the GOP have rushed to his defense, including some potential running mate contenders.
“The American people hate how the justice system was weaponized to convict President Trump. They are opening up their wallets to protest Joe Biden and House Democrats’ kangaroo court, and they will deliver the final verdict with their votes this November,” NRCC National Press Secretary Will Reinert said in a statement.
NRSC Executive Director Jason Thielman said “outrage” over the verdict “spurred grassroots Americans into action.”
Trump’s campaign has also worked to raise funds off the guilty verdict, and reported a $35 million haul after it was announced.
