Five people reported dead as Dorian continues to pound Bahamas

Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis reportedly said Monday evening that at least five people have died in the Abaco Islands as Category 4 Hurricane Dorian continues to wreak havoc on the region.

Dorian, which reached its peak as a Category 5 storm on Sunday, is “unprecedented and extensive,” Minnis said, according to ABC News.

“We are in the midst of a historic tragedy,” he added, according to the Associated Press.

The additional deaths come after multiple news outlets said earlier Monday that an 8-year-old boy was the first reported death at the hands of the storm, which missed Puerto Rico and the southern part of Florida but is now bearing down on parts of the Eastern Seaboard.{mosads}

The boy reportedly died on Abaco Island, but Bahamian authorities have yet to confirm the death.

The National Hurricane Center warned on Sunday that strong winds are expected to affect the Carolinas and Georgia early this week.

President Trump declared a state of emergency for Georgia on Sunday as Hurricane Dorian continued to head toward the U.S. Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina are also in states of emergency ahead of the storm’s attack.

Virginia became the latest state to declare a state of emergency, with Gov. Ralph Northam (D) making the declaration on Monday as the hurricane is expected to hit the southeast portion of the state Thursday.
