Man who threw egg at Macron admitted to psychiatric hospital, French officials say
Prosecutors on Tuesday confirmed that a 19-year-old student who reportedly threw an egg at French President Emmanuel Macron was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
The French prosecutors told The Associated Press that the student received a psychiatric evaluation that ascertained that he had an “absence of discernment and need for hospitalization.”
On Monday, the man reportedly threw the egg at Macron as he made his way through a crowd during an international food fair in Lyon. The egg hit the French president on the shoulder but did not break until it hit the ground.
The young man also made a political gesture and shouted “vive la révolution” at the time of the incident, the AP noted.
Police detained him and opened a probe for “assault on a person in a position of public authority,” according to the news service.
Monday marked the second time Macron has been assaulted in recent months while in public.
In June, a video of a man slapping Macron in the face during a visit to meet with health care workers was widely circulated.
The man was sentenced to four months in prison following the incident.
