Poll: Most believe Weinstein accusations but doubt Trump allegations

A new poll finds that a majority of Americans who identify as Republican believe the sexual harassment and assault allegations against Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein are credible, but few believe similar allegations against Trump.

The HuffPost-YouGov poll found that 61 percent of Republicans and 69 percent of Democrats believe the allegations against Weinstein are credible.

Three percent of both Democrats and Republicans surveyed said the allegations against Weinstein were not credible.

{mosads}When asked about allegations against Trump, just 18 percent of Republicans believe they are credible, versus 69 percent of Democrats. Four percent of Democrats said the allegations against Trump were not credible compared to 37 percent of Republicans.

The poll was conducted from Oct. 12 to 13 and surveyed 1,000 U.S. citizens aged 18 and older. The margin of error for the poll is 4.1 percentage points.

Dozens of actresses, models and film industry employees have detailed accounts of sexual harassment and assault by Weinstein since bombshell reports were published in The New York Times and The New Yorker detailing the Hollywood producer’s past behavior.

Weinstein has been expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and his wife has since filed for divorce, citing his “unforgivable” actions. 

The Los Angeles Police Department began investigating rape allegations against Weinstein this week.

During the 2016 presidential race, 11 women accused Trump of sexual harassment after the controversial “Access Hollywood” tape from 2005 was leaked in the news. The audio of the tape caught Trump bragging about groping and kissing women without consent.

Trump denied the allegations last year and again on Monday, calling them “fake” and “made-up stuff.”
